Flash Flooding Coastal flooding River flooding
Impacts of Floods in Texas
Background Information:
A flood is an overflowing of large amounts of water beyond its normal confines. The three types of floods are flash floods, river floods, and coastal floods. A flash flood is a sudden flood due to heavy rain. A river flood is when a river overflows and submerges land. A coastal flood is when normally dry land is flooded by sea water.
Impact:
Floods can destroy drainage systems in cities. It can cause gasoline, sewage, and other wastes to spill out into bodies of water such as rivers. This can poison and seriously harm many of the species in the body of water. The effect on one or more animal(s) will have a huge impact on the entire ecosystem. Too much water from flooding can also kill producers. This will have a domino effect on the rest of the food web.
